Specification Guidelines

There are several considerations when specifying powder coating:

  1. Will the applicator use quality materials, e.g. powder grades and chemical alloy types?
  2. Is the powder supported by a credible powder coating supplier that provides a warranty?
  3. Will the applicator follow the correct procedures?
  4. Will the finish comply with AS3715-2002?

Qualicoat answers these questions for you, as specifying Qualicoat approval ensures a compliant finish with the assurance that it has been professionally applied.

Architectural applications to aluminium and
aluminium alloy substrates

AS3715 – 2002 Metal Finishing - Thermoset powder coating for architectural applications of aluminium and aluminium alloys.

Powder supply/manufacture
Powders to be approved by the international Qualicoat organisation. Minimum rating for Australian conditions is Class 1.5 (International Class 1 powders are considered unsuitable for Australian environmental conditions). Refer www.qualicoat.org.au for further details.

The powder colour to be referenced by a brand and product number and preferably with an enclosed sample.

Powder application
Powder only to be applied by a licensed AISF Qualicoat applicator. The powder coating applicator licence number should be quoted on relevant documentation.

The international Qualicoat system is administered by the Australasian Institute of Surface Finishing.  Qualicoat approves powder manufacturers’ products and pretreatment systems. Qualicoat also licences applicators and NATA-approved auditors conduct random audits on applicators twice a year. The Qualicoat licensing system is used internationally in 39 countries. It is applicable for both local and imported aluminium products and ensures compliance of all products with the requirements of Australian Standard  AS3715. Class 1.5 powders are the minimum grade for Australian conditions.

In Australia, powder manufacturer warranties exclude powder application faults, such as coating failures caused by incorrect pre-treatment, curing or coating thickness. Powder manufacturers endorse and support the specification of Qualicoat licensed applicators.
